About Amanda
Amanda Conner started out in comics working
on small projects for Marvel and Archie. She had been working
as an illustrator for New York ad agencies Kornhauser and
Calene and Kidvertisers. She worked on a number of launches
and campaigns such as Arm & Hammer, PlaySchool and Nickelodeon,
to name a few.
However, loving comic books and cartooning the
most, Amanda found herself working for Marvel on their Barbie
line (many of Amanda's covers were made into designs for the
line of Barbie toys), Disney line which inlcuded the Gargoyles
books. At the same time she was illustrating Soul Searchers
& Co. for Claypool Comics and worked on other Marvel projects,
such as Excalibur for the X-Men line and Suburban
Jersey Ninja She-Devils.
Amanda
then moved on to do what is probably her best known work.
She did several years as penciler on the hit series Vampirella
for Harris Comics. While illustrating Vampirella, Amanda worked
with the top writers in the field, Grant Morrison, Mark Millar
and Warren Ellis.
Continuing to expand her horizons, Amanda illustrated
the best selling Event Comic Painkiller Jane vs the Darkness
and went on to work on Painkiller Jane #0 (the origin
book). She also wrote and illustrated a story for Kid Death
and Fluffy.
Since then, Amanda has moved on and has worked
on many of the top titles in comics such as Lois Lane,
Codename: Knockout, and Birds of Prey for D.C.
Comics Vertigo line, X-Men Unlimited for Marvel, co-created
Gatecrasher for BlackBull Comics, and The Pro,
a creator owned book for image with Jimmy Palmiotti and Garth
Ennis.
Amanda's work can also be seen outside the comicbook
community in such places as ABC'S Nightline, the New York
Times, Mad Magazine, character designs for film and television,
and Amanda is featured in a Biography magazine commercial
on A&E.
Take a look at Amanda's list of work here.
I was born in LA. The doctor who delivered me
was Dr. Moe....no, really!!! Al and Eulala are my mom and
dad (it's pronounced you-lay-la). They are both artists, too.
I've been drawing since I could hold a pencil. I used to get
hollered at for pilfering all their art supplies. Now they
seem kinda glad that I did.
When I was six and a half I was thrust into
sibling-hood. My baby brother is Ezra. He's a cross between
Jeff Spicoli and McGuyver.
We eventually moved to Florida. 'Spring break,
south of Daytona, displaced Yankee' Florida. We went to 'how
y'all doing, damn good barbecue, trespassers will be shot'
Jacksonville, Florida. That's where my grandma lives.
That's also where I discovered Monty Python.
I was still pretty little and the Monty Python humor was a
bit too sophisticated for me, but when my parents tuned in
to watch it I'd stick around to see the naked guy playing
the organ during the title credits.
We moved to Connecticut several years later.
Talk about culture shock! All the kids wore expensive stuff
and I was sporting polyester pants with kooky diamond shapes
on them and a turtle neck with monkeys all over it. Sixth
grade was hell. High school was a lot better. I was still
a total geek but I hid it very well.I would draw pictures
during math class and read comics during art class. I sure
wish I had stayed in acting class, I would have liked to become
an action movie hero like Bruce Willis or Ah-nuld.
I then went to the Joe Kubert School in New
Jersey to learn how to draw even better. Got married, opened
up a cool comic store with husband, got divorced.
I live in Brooklyn now. Brooklyn is a whole
entire world inside a 75 square mile area. It's got a whole
range of smells from the sewage treatment plant by the movie
theaters, to Nathan's in Coney Island, to the lady down the
hall who seems to be a culinary genius. But most of all, Brooklyn
has Jimmy Palmiotti: brilliant comic boy, bottomless pit of
ideas, love of my life, human amusement park, and guy snoozing
to my left. Brooklyn's been good!
Just about everything...
Going to the movies
Traveling
Putting a small piece of hamburger meat in the
bottom of a White Castle box and when the cat go to get it,
the box attaches to their head. (Also works with Macdonald's
french fry boxes!) Just make sure to remove the box after
you get your laff.
Leaving things in the fridge for weeks so that
I can listen to Jimmy make colorful analogies for the smell.
When I was a little kid - Poseidon Adventure.
When I was a bigger kid - Star wars.
When I sorta grew up - Terminator.
I'm still working on the next favorite movie.
Lots of good ones, having trouble picking!
Movie I can't seem to get sick of no mater how
many times I watch it - Jaws.
